Matthias Kamps studied orchestra music in Detmold and Essen. Upon becoming a scholar of the Herbert-von-Karajan Foundation in 1996, he sought to improve his instrumental skillset in Chicago and Amsterdam. He was granted membership of the Orchester-Akademie by the Berliner Philharmoniker and is – since 1998 – Associate Principal Trumpeter at the Komische Oper Berlin Orchestra.
